ChatGPT vs Google – Development and Differences

AI tools are transforming how we search for information – and ChatGPT has quickly become one of the most used. In fact, “ChatGPT” was one of the world's most googled terms in 2025 with over 618 million searches per month. Since its launch, Google's global traffic has decreased by nearly 8%, suggesting that more people are now turning to AI instead of traditional search engines.

Search vs. Chat

In the early 2000s, searching was mainly about simple keywords. A search could then consist of just a few words. Over time, Google's algorithms improved and could first handle longer and more natural queries. According to a study conducted in 2023 by StatCounter, almost 60% of all Google searches now consist of longer phrases and questions with four or more words. This means users had started using more detailed searches even before chatbots became as big as they are today.

Nevertheless, despite longer queries with more detailed descriptions of what one is searching for, search engines like Google often still respond by listing links that force the user to scroll through multiple sources, and that's where AI searches change everything.

To meet the development, Google has launched its own AI feature: AI Overview, which summarizes information from multiple sources directly in the search result. In March 2025, it appeared in 13% of all searches, a clear increase from January the same year (6.5%).

Different Types of Interactions

ChatGPT and Google are both effective search engines. Both tools are extremely useful and helpful, but depending on what you're searching for, one tool may sometimes be more suitable than the other. The search engines can be compared in millions of different categories. But what is really the difference between Google and ChatGPT – and when should you use which tool? Below they are briefly compared in three broad categories.

1. Information Search

ChatGPT provides answers in coherent text, often more explanatory and tailored to the user's level. You don't need to phrase the question perfectly – the AI understands anyway.

Google, especially with AI Overview, provides short summaries but lacks the ability for follow-up questions. Each search is treated in isolation, making conversations less dynamic.

2. Navigation (Finding Web Pages)

Are you looking for a specific website?

ChatGPT can provide a direct link and briefly explain the page's content.

Google usually shows the page first in the search results and adds related links or questions other users have asked.

3. Commercial Searches (Products & Services)

For product comparisons, ChatGPT can help weigh pros and cons, tailor responses to your preferences, and remember previous questions.

Google, on the other hand, can display images, videos, reviews, and ads – and builds its recommendations on user data and search history.
